In a state as densely populated as New Jersey, it is imperative to protect the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the space in which we live. As a co-sponsor of bills like the “Global Warming Response Act,” and as a consummate supporter of open-space programs, Nellie Pou has made environmental protection and preservation a top priority.
The Senator is particularly committed to improving and expanding urban environmental health and sustainability.
In 2004, Senator Pou sponsored legislation to dedicate park and open space development funding to densely populated communities, where access to open and "green" space often is limited. Compounding the issue in these communities are high instances of Brownfield sites-- sites marked for redevelopment or reuse, which may contain hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants-- that remain largely undeveloped.
In the corresponding photos, Senator Pou visits such a remediated Brownfield site: the former Apollo Dye Plant in Paterson. The remediated site is slated to be the future home of affordable housing units.
